Nick, when it came down to it, did not need a job. His family was upper class, and his father didn't WANT him to have a job, because his job was to take care of his little brother. So that's what he was doing today. He had Michael with him, and he had taken him to the mall. The little three year old boy still was in awe, every single time they went to the mall. He would try and wander off, and Nick would have to pick him up. He would squirm, cry a little bit, and then cling to Nick for dear life as soon as he saw something that was in the least bit scary. Nick was used to this by now.
Walking through the mall with his little brother in his arms, he was getting quite bored. He had already gotten ice cream, and it was already gone. He had already gone to the music store, and gotten a few new CDs. He figured it would probably be time to go home soon. He looked at Michael, who was sucking his thumb (Nick never remembered to pull it out when he did that, it was bad for his teeth), and smiled. "Are you ready to go home, little fella?" he asked. Michael's eyes widened, and just like that, he was on the verge of tears.
"... Alright, never mind then. We'll stay here." Nick quickly decided, sitting down on a bench near the fountain in the middle of the mall, and sitting Michael down beside him. "Stay." he demanded, and was shocked when Michael actually did as told. Nick nodded, and then stretched out on the bench, deciding that while he waited for Michael to fall asleep, he could do some people watching.

Blaine Anderson did not need a job, either, however he did have one. In fact, he had a job that he enjoyed. Certainly, singing in front of an inattentive audience at theme park was not the most glamorous experience,at least he was able to do something he enjoyed and earn a little extra cash. For now, his parents pretty much covered his necessary expenses, but it was never too early to start saving up a little cash for college. Besides, it was always possible that some hot-shot talent agent or college recruiter could show up in the audience. Perhaps it was extremely unlikely, but it was possible.
Today, however, Blaine did not have to work, and so he was getting a little necessary retail therapy. Kurt was working at his Dad's shop, so a day trip out to Lima was not possible, which gave Blaine the opportunity to shop for their three month-versary. He knew it was silly to celebrate such trivial occasions, but he could not help it. He loved Kurt, and while he might not be able to express it quite as eloquently as his paramour, but little tokens of affection could go a long way.
Blaine perused various shops, searching for a gift that was neither too ostentatious, nor too cheap to even be noticed. Kurt was such a unique individual, that buying for him was a little difficult at times, even with as well as the Warbler knew him. Swinging by the In-Mall Starbucks to pick up a medium drip to re-energize him, Blaine noticed a familiar face resting on the bench. Actually, he recognized two faces: both his fellow Warbler Nick, and his little brother Michael. The curly-haired boy attempted to sneak up on his friend, pressing his finger to his lips as he made eye-contact with Michael, but evidently such gestures were lost on the little guy, who shouted out, "Look, it's Brain!" he shouted happily.
Sighing, as his attempt at stealth failed miserably, he leaned over the bench, extended a hand for Michael to high-five. "Hey guys, what are you doing here on this fine summer afternoon?" he asked, as dapper ever.

Nick looked up as Michael shouted something about a brain, and his mind immediately went to the mouse with the huge head, from Pinky and the Brain. However, when he saw the lead of the Warblers, Blaine Anderson, he wasn't too disappointed. Nick raised an eyebrow as he high fived his little brother, who, just like that, was back to being wide awake and hyper. He shook his head, and then looked up at Blaine. "Babysitting. For some reason, Michael just loves this place." he explained, shrugging his shoulders. Nick studied Blaine, as he hadn't seem him for awhile (it being summer and all), and then smiled lightly.
Blaine was cute. There was no denying it. Nick had always thought this, but obviously, had kept his mouth shut. He was on team Klaine as much as the rest of the Warblers, but he couldn't help thinking that Blaine was hot. He knew he wasn't the only one either. When Blaine first opened his mouth for the Warblers, every gay, bi, and probably straight, boy in the room was smitten. Most of them had gotten over it. Even Nick, mostly. but still. Seeing him for the first time all summer, he had to take it in a little bit.
"Hi, by the way. Where's Kurt? I thought you two were attached at the lips." Nick teased, tossing a wink towards the boy, and then settling back down. Michael was squirming, looking towards a boy with candy. Nick wrapped an arm around him to keep him still, and then looked down at him, silencing his pleas before they were even spoken.

After Blaine high-fived Michael, the younger Duval brother held on to his hand, inspecting the lines with curious intrigue. Blaine did not mind, however, and allowed the three year old to do whatever it was he wanted to do. He always wished that he had a little brother, and had taken to his good pal's sibling almost instantly. Nick explained that he was babysitting, and had elected to take his brother to the mall because, for whatever reason, the kid really liked the place. Blaine chuckled, before adding, "Sounds like Kurt."
It was good to see Nick, the curly-haired boy thought, and Michael for that matter. The two of them had been pretty good friends for a while now, but at the present, Blaine's time was occupied with a certain Lima counter-tenor. In the summer, his distraction was even more obvious. At least during the school year, he had classes and rehearsals with his friends, so they at least saw each other on a normal basis. It was easier to catch up. Now, whenever Blaine had a free afternoon, he was making the voyage to Lima for a romantic rendezvous. Seeing Michael for the first time in a while made him realize that even more. As committed as he was to Kurt, perhaps he should make some effort to maintain his friendships. "He's gotten bigger," Blaine remarked as the boy finally lost interest in his hand.
Blaine could only smile as Nick inquired about Kurt, remarking that the two boys were practically locked at the lips. Evidently, his friend had also noticed where Blaine's focus had been the past few months. "Oh, we're not that bad are we?" he asked, already knowing the answer. They were that bad. "He's actually working in Lima today as his dad's car shop. Yes, Kurt works at a car shop. It's pretty adorable actually to see him in his jump suit. He almost died the first time I came by." Even just thinking about the other boy brought a big goofy grin to Blaine's face. With Kurt's normally immaculate fashion sense, having to dress like a mechanic was a mortifying experience, but Blaine found it almost painfully cute.
"He's actually why I'm here though. This Friday will be three month's together and I want to get him something special. I know, it's kind of silly to celebrate such small milestones, but it feels a lot bigger." He felt almost silly even saying that out loud. If someone had approached Blaine a year ago, looking for the perfect item to commemorate 3 months together, he probably would have called them sappy. The Blaine of a year ago, however, had not met Kurt. "Kurt's surprisingly kind of hard to buy for. I tried Burberry earlier, but I'm pretty sure Kurt pre-orders everything months before it's even released to us common-folk."

Nick smiled at his little brother, and watched as he basically memorized Blaine's hand. He nodded, and looked up at Blaine with a raised eyebrow. "Small children tend to do that. Especially when you haven't seen them in nearing six months." he said with a smirk, before poking Blaine's arm. He listened to him talk (quite a lot) about Kurt, before shrugging.
"Blaine, dear, I don't even know what to buy my family for Christmas or what not. And my outfits, when not in uniform, tend to consist of a t-shirt and jeans. Maybe you should get him something.. sentimental or whatever. Like a fridge magnet." Nick said with a small grin, looking down at Michael again. The younger boy was watching Blaine with a look of pure adoration. Hey, maybe it ran in the family. Nick blushed slightly at the thought, before rolling his eyes at himself, and looking back up at Blaine. "Wish I could be more help, bro." he said with a shrug.

Blaine grinned as Nick told him that if he could find a miniature Warbler uniform, he would do his best to get Michael in it. Poking the little guy in the chest he asked playfully, "How about that? Do you think you'd look dang good in a Warbler outfit? Yeah, yeah you'd have to keep the girls away with a bat wouldn't you?" Helping the boy take a seat in between himself and Nick, he leaned back in his own seat. He could always make him a jacket for his birthday, or, perhaps more fittingly, for Halloween. He could not really sew, but he would find a way. Duct tape could do a lot.
The topic of love life was always a tricky one for teenagers, especially those who attended an all-male school. Options were certainly more limited, although Crawford was not too far away. A lot of the boys at Dalton Academy dated those girls, though Blaine was not so sure that that was what Nick wanted. The boy laughed, a little sourly, at the question, though Blaine kept an earnest face. "Let's go with the imaginary one," he replied, as if the options presented were genuine. Nick was a good guy, so whatever he was after, Blaine knew he would find it sooner rather than later. "But seriously, I hear the New Directions are getting a bunch of new members this year. Kurt would probably be happy to set you up with one of them. Santana's having a Bar-Be-Que next week, I think I saw you on the facebook evite. You should come," Blaine continued, his mind already racing ahead to the various possibilities, "Plus if you did meet someone, we could carpool down to Lima."
Personally, Blaine sort of thought that Nick and Jeff would make a cute couple, but he did not suggest that. The two of them were best friends, really close, but just friends as far as Blaine knew, although he was evidently pretty out of the loop with the lives of his fellow Warblers. Part of him really hoped that Nick dated someone at McKinley; it would give them easy catch-up time on the car ride there. Plus, double dates were always fun.
The curly-haired Warbler was not sure if he should have been put off by Nick's comment about being a trophy husband to Broadway star Kurt Hummel, and the singing at Six Flags remark was certainly a bit snide, but he did not get overly upset. Dramatically clutching his hand to his heart, Blaine pouted, "Ooooh, you've got some sass today." He looked over the other boy, before folding his arms and playfully adding, "Sounds like somebody wishes that he could humiliate himself on a daily basis."

Nick shrugged, knowing it wasn't really a big deal. But Blaine trying to put it off was kinda... well, Nick just nodded. "Yeah. You saw him at his birthday, which was like, January. But it's whatever." he said, smiling lightly. "It's not like you're his brother or something. That's me." When Blaine commented about a mini-Warbler's blazer, Nick rolled his eyes with a grin. "You find him one, and I'll try and get him in it. Good lucky. I don't think any of the Warblers are THAT tiny."
Nick turned to not look at Blaine, which meant basically look anywhere else in the mall, and ended up focusing on the book store closest to him. He watched as a stream of people came in and out, before hearing Blaine words and laughing. "What love life? The non-existent one, the invisible one, or the one in my imagination?" he asked with a grin, turning back to Blaine and winking. Alright, so, he didn't have a love life. That was fine. Maybe he'd meet someone this year, someone who actually noticed him, and liked him back. That'd be nice.
"I'd ask you the same, but I think we all know where yours is heading. Eloping to New York and being the trophy husband of Broadway star, Kurt Hummel. Oh, and performing at Six Flags." Alright, that might have been kind of mean. But Nick shrugged it off, deciding that if Blaine wanted to get offended, he'd get offended. He was really good with Michael though. There was a reason the kid loved him.

Nick watched Michael squirm, and shrug his little shoulders at Blaine. It was obvious he had stopped paying attention the moment they had started talking about clothes. He was now back to looking at all the candy and balloons surrounding him. Nick sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. He knew, and he knew Michael knew, that before they were heading home, the little boy would have candy and a balloon in his possession. Nick's breath hitched a bit when Blaine asked him about his imaginary love life, and he let out a breath slowly.
"Well, in my imagination there's this guy. Pity it's just my imagination. But you know. Whatever." He listened to Blaine talk about Lima, and rolled his eyes. He wasn't sure if he really wanted to meet anyone from Lima. He had seen how distant Blaine had become from the rest of the Warblers after he had met Kurt. Now, the Warblers... they had always been pretty good friends. But there was a group of them, Nick, Jeff, Wes, Dave, a few others, and Blaine until recently, who had been really good friends. And this summer, they had all hung out quite a bit. Minus Blaine. Who was always in Lima. Nick didn't want that to happen to him. Bros before hoes, right?
"Maybe... I can't promise anything though." He stated, shrugging, before raising an eyebrow at Blaine. "... Some sass? Nah. And I don't like humiliating myself, actually. Hey, out of curiosity, have you hung out with David or Wes this summer?" he asked, throwing it out there as if it were a casual question. Maybe he shouldn't care about this so much. But.. well, Blaine was their leader after all. Wes and David and Thad could deny that all they wanted, but it was true. Blaine was the one they all rallied around. And even though it was summer, Nick still felt that way. And... Alright, he was just really good at making big deals out of nothing. Jealousy had nothing to do with it. He swore.

Blaine raised his eyebrows slightly as Nick mentioned the imaginary guy in his head. So there was someone, then. He just knew it was Jeff, even if Nick did not admit it. It was understandable, Nick's hesitance, since nobody seemed to quite know which way Jeff swung, but maybe he just needed somebody like Nick to help him come out of his shell. "So this guy in your head? Would I happen to know him?" he inquired innocently, hoping to get some hint from his elusive friend. Maybe they both needed just a little push, and if so, Blaine was happy to oblige. He knew first-hand that sometimes stuff like this took a little prodding.
Placing a reassuring hand on Nick's shoulder, he tried to be the understanding friend that he used to be. "Sometimes people just need to be told how you feel, Nick. Even if you think it's obvious, some people can just be oblivious. I mean, I had no idea how Kurt felt until he told me in February. Can you believe that? But I'm so glad he took that risk." Reflecting on that moment, in the coffee shop where Kurt told him how he felt, Blaine was pretty sure he had known that he reciprocated those feelings even then, he just was not ready to admit it, to Kurt or to himself. Now, however, he felt like things in his life were perfect, even if the distance presented a challenge.
Blaine suddenly felt on the defensive as Nick abruptly asked if he had spent any time with David or Wes this summer. Sheepishly, Blaine scratched the side of his curly-haired head. He had not. "Uh, well, I've wanted to, it's just been hectic, you know? I've been so busy with Six Flags, and figuring out college and...stuff," he tried to explain, not wanting to actually pin the blame on Kurt, even though it was the obvious elephant in the room. He wanted all of the Warblers to continue to like his boyfriend, and blaming him for Blaine's absence was not going to do that any favors. Even he didn't believe his lame answer though.
"Nick I know I've been kind of, missing in action, but we're still friends, and I'm still going to give 100% to the Warblers once school starts. Trust me, I want to go one round further as badly as anyone."

Nick's eyes widened when Blaine asked if he knew who he liked. He shook his head quickly, and then cleared his throat, trying to stop a blush from spreading across his face. "Uh, no, you don't know him. He's, um, a family friend. And trust me, I can't tell him about it. That'd be bad. Horrible even." he stated, nodding and looking down at Michael. The little boy was watching him curiously, And Nick sighed. He shook his head lightly at the boy, before keeping it stationary. He was moving his head around too much, he was gonna end up with a head ache.
Nick resisted the urge to roll his eyes again at Blaine's answer, and shrugged. "Right, well, they're going off to college in the fall. You might wanna get some time in with them before they leave." he said, biting his lip. "Cause, I don't think we're gonna see em much when they do." He didn't believe Blaine at all, but figured he wouldn't push the Kurt thing. Hell, he didn't want Blaine to hate him.
"You know you're like, a shoo in for counsel member this year." He said softly, shrugging. He knew he would vote for him. "It'd be nice to move on. Everyone always says that you can't date the competition.. But you won't have any problems with that, right Blaine? I mean. God knows if you were ever easy on the New Directions, the Warblers would rip you apart limb from limb and feed you to the gavel as an offering." he said, putting on a disturbing smile and grinning at Blaine. Ah. He loved being weird.

Blaine decided to allow the topic of Nick's potential love interest subside. His friend was blushing at the subject as it was, and was clearly not going to divulge any more information about this mystery man. That was fine, really. Blaine would have plenty of opportunities to pry later, and plot to get Nick fixed up with someone, as the guy obviously wanted to be in a relationship. His mind was already racing through the various options both at Dalton, Crawford and McKinley. He certainly was not going to set him up with some Vocal Adrenaline jerk, but there were plenty of options. Nick was a good-looking guy, so it would be easy to find someone interested. Heck, there were probably already some ladies and gentlemen lining up already, if he would just open his eyes up to the possibilities.
Blaine turned from sheepish to defensive as Nick commented that if he wanted to see his friends before they let for college, he had better lock in time now. Instantly, his hand, which had been resting supportively on his friend's shoulder, retracted. Coupled with his earlier comments, the frequent soloist was beginning to feel that the hostility he felt was not entirely all amicable. Before he could even open his mouth to offer some rebuttal, however meager it might have been, Nick continued, warning him about the dangers of sleeping with the enemy, so to speak, and that Blaine had better not go easy on the New Directions or face the ire of his fellow Warblers. He got that the last part was a bit tongue in cheek, but that did not stop the curly-haired boy from being more than a little agitated by the whole message behind the point.
"Look, Nick, if you have something that you want to say, or whatever, I'd really rather you just say it," he began, his bushy eyebrows furrowed as he tried to contain the frustration swelling inside of him. "I don't know what this is all about, if you don't like Kurt, or you're jealous that I've met someone or what, but I'm not, I'm not going to apologize for being in love. Yes, Kurt takes up some of my time now. Okay, he takes up a lot of my time. But shouldn't you be happy that I found someone? I love Kurt, and if you can't understand that..." Blaine's voice trailed off and he just shook his head. Michael looked up at him, obviously aware that the conversation had taken a rather tense turn, but seemed unsure of what exactly to do. Blained tried to smile at the boy, but he was pretty sure that even a three year old could tell that he did not really mean it. "Maybe I should go."

Nick let out a sigh, and shook his head. "Sorry. It's just. It's not that you found someone. Obviously. I'm happy for you, I really am, you know all of the Warblers are happy for you guys. But... Well, they really are leaving, you know. Kurt'll be here for awhile.. I don't know. I just don't think ignoring your friends just 'cause you suddenly got a boyfriend is a good thing to do. You obviously don't have to listen to me. I suck at relationships." He muttered, looking away from Blaine as he finished. Alright. He was a tad bit jealous. Although he knew he had no right to be. It wasn't like he was going to mention anything. Kurt.. he seemed like the type that could be really scary when needed. And he didn't want to ruin his relationship with Blaine either.
"I'm sorry. You don't have to leave. I'm just a grumpy person, I guess." He stated, frowning, and biting his lip. Yup. He had royally screwed up the first time he saw Blaine all summer. He was remarkable, wasn't he? He squeezed his eyes shut tightly, before opening them and turning to look at Blaine again. "I'm sorry. I don't know what got into me. Of course, you should spend time with Kurt. He's the more important one." ... Oh. That might sound bad too. He winced, and tried to fix it. "I mean, since he's your boyfriend and all.. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm sorry." he finally gave in, basically collapsing against the bench, and wrapping an arm around Michael, who looked up at him with puppy dog eyes. Great. Michael was sad too now.

Blaine did not like hearing the word's coming from Nick's mouth. They were harsh, angry, arguably jealous and, perhaps most frustrating, pretty true. The Warbler knew that he had been neglectful of his friendships, particularly since the start of summer. Balancing a romantic relationship with friendships was hard for anyone, and given the distance between Blaine's boyfriend and himself, along with the fact that it was the first real crack at anything like this for either boy, and it was no surprise that he was failing.
Looking down at his shoes, just to avoid making eye-contact with Nick for a moment. He did not like facing the fact that he was letting his friends, and his teammates, down due to his preoccupation with a member of the rival school. Of course, this was no mere school boy crush, they were very much in love, but it was still a conflict of interest, and Blaine knew that. Kurt changed his life, but so had the Warblers. When he joined Dalton, he was shy, inhibited by the bullies of his past who he had allowed to shove him around and make him feel like dirt. The guys at Dalton had accepted him right away, even thrusting him into the spotlight. He owed them more than what he was currently giving.
"Look Nick, you're right," Blaine began slowly. "I haven't been a very good friend, let alone a leader of the Warblers. I'm trying really hard, I am, but this is completely new territory for me. Look, I love Kurt, and so that does mean I have to prioritize him, but that doesn't give me an excuse to be neglectful of you guys. Your friendships mean..a lot." Blaine was not the best at expressing his feelings, particularly to his friends, but he felt like he needed to, "Look how about we, all of us, go do something this weekend? We can go see Harry Potter or.." his voice trailed off as a playful grin came across his face, "I heard a new Gap just opened down off of 15th Street."

Nick grinned slightly at the words of the lead singer, and nodded. "That'd be cool... If Jeff and I hadn't seen Harry Potter opening night or anything... And you probably shouldn't get anymore Gap employees fired this year. But we should do something." he said with a nod, looking down and pulling Michael onto his lap. The little boy had started squirming, obviously getting bored. Nick kissed the hair that was almost the same color as his own, and then looked over at Blaine.
"I'm sorry I was... slightly... touchy about this subject. I just missed you." he said, hesitating a minute before speaking. Maybe that wasn't the best thing to say. Maybe he should just get up and walk away now. Or maybe Blaine wouldn't read much into it. He could only hope it was the last one. Michael looked at Blaine too, and nodded. "Missed you." the little boy said, his face completely serious. Nick had to smile. The Duval brother's were pretty close. Even if there was a fourteen year age difference between them.
((I'm sorry this took me forever and is so short. Feel free to hate me. D:))
