There were two things that Rachel Berry did not cope well with, extreme heat and boredom and today she was having to deal with both of these, something she wasn't used to. Normally, the heat in Ohio would reach a satisfactory level for Rachel, hot enough for her to get a nice tan but cool enough to allow her to not over-heat and bored? That would never crossed Rachel's mouth - until now.
Having woke up - a lot earlier than usual, Rachel had opted to spend the day out instead of home alone in her house. However, after twenty minutes of walking in the intense heat she soon regretted her decision. Letting out a small sigh, she ducked under some trees for some shade and whipped her phone out. She scrolled through her list of contacts and wondered who she could call. There was Kurt - who had become one of Rachel's best friends, she was surprised they hadn't formed a friendship sooner but she was just happy that they had finally found their way to it. The two had shared some incredibly special times, especially on their recent visit to New York. A small grin spread across her face as the memories came back to her but soon disappeared when the thought of Finn entered. Frowning, Rachel sat herself down under the tree she had gotten shelter from.
Finn. She was confused after the kiss they shared at Nationals. Something which she regretted so much and then not so much. So much because it had caused her once again to become the target at glee club, most weren't impressed by the 'Finchel' kiss on the stage in front of everyone - helping them to lose but a part of her enjoyed it. It was Finn after all. Since coming back from New York, Rachel had done her best to avoid the tall footballer though, her mind was in a complete state of confusion. Of course she would always have feelings for Finn, ones that ran much deeper than friendship but did she want to get back together with him? She had no idea.
Groaning, she threw her head back dramatically against the tree and soon cursed when the force hurt much more than she had thought. Confused and hot. This was not turning out to be a good day for Rachel Berry.

A small huff of annoyance escaped Rachel's mouth as she placed one of her hands behind her head and rubbed it slightly. As the dull ache starting to come to a stop, she moved her hand and once again held on to her phone. Her fingers scrolled through the list of names that were seemingly mocking her. She wanted to call someone but she couldn't help but feel that she would be bothering them.
As a tall shadow appeared in front of her, Rachel glanced up, her eyes squinting slightly to try and get a look as to who it was. However as soon as she heard the voice, it was easy to recognise. Rachel frowned as she listened to his words and spread a childish pout over her face. "It's not nice to mock someone when they could have just given themselves a serious concussion" she whined. "And of course it was not my intention to cause the tree any harm, or myself for that matter" she concluded and then let out a small chuckle. "Bark ache? That's lame" she replied but couldn't help but find herself laughing at the bad joke. Looking back up at the boy, her eyes squinted slightly more. The sun was definitely not giving her a break today. Placing one of her hands over her eyes, she smiled. "Not that it's not nice to see you, Sky but what brings you over to this part of town?" she questioned.

Rachel watched as Sky took a seat next to her. She shuffled her body around slightly so she was facing him a little bit more. Rachel nodded her head a little too enthusiastically. "They should. I heard about two tree related deaths that happened in England due to a falling branch" she replied seriously. "Of course this incident was entirely my fault so I cannot blame the tree" she added on with a grin. Rachel's eyes fell down to Sky's guitar and then back to his eyes as he mentioned he had been busking. It was something Rachel had never even done. "Busking?" she repeated, her eyes suddenly widened with interest. "What's that like? Why do you do it?" she asked, interested to know what it was like.
Rachel rolled her eyes as he mentioned his joke. "I hate to break it to you then but you need to work a little harder on your wise cracks - as you put it". Her head soon nodded in agreement as Sky noted the weather. "It is, I agree" she mumbled as she immediately regretted her choice of clothing for the day. She had opted for a medium skirt and a short sleeved plain tee..but even they were sticking to her body.
"3 hours? Are you crazy? Do you know that just last year 90 cases of death were reported due to sunstroke and 85 the year before that?" Rachel shook her head as she reached for her full water bottle and held it out towards Sky. "You might need this more than me?" she offered.
As Sky asked what had bought her out to the park, Rachel stretched her legs out in front of her and shrugged lightly. "My Daddy's are away, got a little bored in the house by myself. I thought a walk would be a better option but between the sun and the tree I'm thinking I should have just stayed in" she added with a small frown.

Rachel let out a laugh as Sky commented on being thankful that his voice was better than his jokes. "You do have a lovely voice making you quite the catch. Any girl or guy would be lucky to date you" she responded and began to listen intently as he answered her question about busking. "But do people actually you know, listen?" she asked as she looked down to his guitar. "I always wanted to play the guitar, however it seems piano was more for me" she mused and fell silent. "A saxophone? I'd love to hear you play sometime if that's okay? Maybe I could even join you on a busking session?" she asked in a hopeful tone. Of course to Rachel, her singing career was always to be seen as professional..but at times she missed singing just for the sake of singing.
Rachel frowned as Sky poured water in his hands and splashed it on his face. "If I knew you were going to do that I wouldn't have offered it to you. There's a fountain right over there. That's just a waste of the water" she frowned but her tone was playful and light.
She nodded in agreement as Sky mentioned about a shower. "You make a valid point. It's just too damn hot to do anything other than sit here" she moaned and then looked back to Sky's guitar. "We could always sing or you know, you can teach me guitar?" she grinned. It was very unlike Rachel to want someone to teach her something but the guitar was always something she had loved but just never attempted. "Unless you have other plans of course" she quickly added on.

Rachel smiled as Sky explained to her that people did in fact listen when he busked and they even paid him. Why hadn't she thought of that before? She would be getting in a lot of practice as well as getting her voice heard by the people who she one day imagined would become her adoring public. Of course when Sky mentioned people applauding at the end, she couldn't help but let out a squeal for excitement because as everyone knew, Rachel Berry lived for applause. "It sounds so exciting! Of course I don't play a saxophone so if anything they'll applaud me for my voice" she mused as her mind went off wandering about what songs she could possibly sing. "I can't wait to come and busk with you" she grinned as she snapped out of her thoughts to see him blushing over her water comment.
Shaking her head, she let out a small chuckle. "I was only joking. Besides, I can't let you dip into your college fund just to buy me some water" she teased and lightly nudged his side with her elbow. As he mentioned about his hair, Rachel glanced up, she tilted her head slightly and then shrugged. "Honestly, it looks fine to me" she commented as she picked up her own hair and placed it over one side of her shoulder, letting her neck get some air to it.
Rachel beamed when Sky told her he had no other plans. Clasping her hands together she sat forward with excitement. She watched as Sky pulled his guitar out and placed it over his neck. Before she had a chance to ask him what they were going to sing, he had already asked her. Nodding, her grin grew bigger. "Of course, it's one of my favourites to listen to at the minute" she responded.

As Sky told Rachel about the numerous phone numbers he would get during busking, she playfully raised an eyebrow. She loved the idea of serenading someone in song but at the moment she definitely didn't need any more potential boyfriends. The issues with Finn were more than she could handle at this point and then of course there was the infamous Jesse St.James who she had gone to prom with. Feeling a headache come on by the thoughts of her messed up love life, Rachel shook them from her mind.
Rachel couldn't help but smile softly as Sky mentioned that his mom loved his hair curly and natural. It seemed like a typical mom thing, at least that's what she thought. Once again her mind wandered but this time to Shelby. Even though she had grown up with two gay dad's, they never seemed to have much of an opinion on Rachel's style. As long as she was happy then so were they and of course to them she always looked 'beautiful'. She couldn't help but wonder if Shelby would perhaps have a preference over her hair. Rachel was bought out of her thoughts when she heard Sky mention his birth parents, she knew the boy, not well but enough but never realised he was adopted. "You're adopted?" she repeated and then thought over his words about meeting his birth dad. Shifting slightly, Rachel glanced down as her hands absent mindlessly pulled at the grass beneath them. "You met them? H...how was that?" she asked, curious to know. After her words came out, Rachel glanced up and suddenly realised that perhaps that was a little too personal for him to answer. "Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pry..I was just curious" she quickly added. She couldn't help but wonder if it was just her and Shelby that seemingly had a problem with their relationships or was it something common in all adopted children? She hadn't met anyone else who had been in a similar situation to her and so her curious mind got the better of her.
Sitting herself forward, Rachel decided to focus on the music. She nodded in response as Sky told her to take lead. " And know I know "Spanish Harlem" are not just pretty words to say. I thought I knew but now I know That rose trees never grow in New York city Oh, until you see this trash can dream come true You stand at the edge while people run you through" Her eyes slightly closed as she began to sing the words, she was easily lost in the music.

As Sky began to answer her question, much to Rachel's surprise, she turned herself so she was now fully facing the blonde haired boy. Her eyes were focused on his as she listened intently. She nodded along, understanding some parts of what he was saying. Rachel never hated Shelby, she was always more intrigued as to who she was, what she was like. However when they time came for her to get a step closer to finding out who her mother was, she was terrified and definitely not ready. If it hadn't been for Jesse, she wondered if she would have ever listened to the tape from her mother.
Rachel's smile fell as Sky explained that his mother wanted nothing to do with him. Rejection, from whoever it was hurt, it was a feeling she was all too familiar with. "I'm sorry" she told him with a genuine sadness but seeing as he seemed alright with that, she smiled lightly.
"Hawaii! Rachel all but screeched as her smile spread into a grin. Traveling was something that had always appealed to Rachel and Hawaii was definitely on her list to go to. Unfortunately for Rachel, the most exotic place she had visited was New York but for her, that was enough for now because she knew that was where she belonged. "That's amazing, I'd love to go to Hawaii. I bet it's such a beautiful place" she mused, her voice drifting off into a dreamy tone.
As Sky told Rachel about his brother insisting on him sleeping on the bunk and him consistently falling off, Rachel broke out into a small laugh. "Well that's one thing I'll never have to experience. Is it nice suddenly finding out you have siblings? I've always wondered what it would be like but sometimes I can't help but think I'm much more suited to be an only child" she told him honestly.
Rachel had gotten so lost within the music that she hadn't noticed Sky not joining in until half way through the song. Mid-way she opened her eyes and watched Sky as he played on the guitar. As the song came to a finish, Rachel clasped her hands together in approval. "Our voices blend so well together" she told him with a nod. "You're a very talented musician, Sky" she praised him.
As Sky asked if Rachel was adopted - she shook her head slightly. "Well, not quite. My two Dad's got a surrogate. Once she had me, she gave me to them and that was that. We sort of found each other a while ago" she explained and then paused, a small but sad smile plastered on her face. "It didn't quite go how I imagined it" she told him truthfully.

As Sky began to express his feelings over being rejected, Rachel nodded enthusiastically. It wasn't the fact she was pleased with what the blonde haired boy was saying, it was the fact that he understood. Everything he was saying was exactly how she had felt. Both Rachel and Shelby had agreed that their meeting wasn't what either had imagined and they parted ways. It hurt Rachel that her mother had done so easily..especially after the two of them had just shared a duet. After that, Rachel once again reached out to Shelby. Tried to convince her to come and coach New Directions. Part of it had been for the benefit of the club but it had also been a selfish ask. She wanted her mother to see her - as a performer AND as her daughter but once again she was rejected and then Shelby went on to adopt Beth, Quinn's baby. Rachel had brushed it off and once again put her focus into her performing but it was something that continued to bite away at her.
"Surfing?" she repeated and raised her eyebrows slightly. Rachel definitely wasn't the most adventurous type when it came to things like that. "I don't think I'd be brave enough to try something like that. Worst I've done is skateboard" she replied and then laughed as Sky mentioned about a child whizzing past him when snow boarding. "Snowboarding? I doubt I'd be any good at that either" she confessed. No, performing was definitely her domain. "I'd love to go to Alaska too. I love the snow. Christmas is my favourite time of year. All the carols, the pretty decorations..and my birthday of course" she gushed suddenly getting lost in a childish memory of Christmas time.
Rachel nodded at Sky's words. She did know where she had come from, she knew pretty much everything about her life. The only missing piece was her mother but even know, she had that information.
When the Warblers came up, Rachel grinned. "You guys were pretty great. It was nice they let Kurt have a solo too..perhaps now that he's back with us you might get a shot?" she told him.
As the conversation once again fell onto their family lives, Rachel's head tilted up, her eyes staring into Sky's as she listened to what he was saying. His words definitely struck something with Rachel. Had Shelby not liked what she'd seen with her? Perhaps that's why she had adopted Beth? Rachel didn't believe that Shelby thought she didn't need her, if anything a girl needs her mother more so in her teenage years of life, they seemed to be the most confusing times for a girl. "She chose to find me, I mean, a part of me had always wanted to but I didn't think I was ready. It was kind of an accident I found out who she was" Rachel started and let out a small sigh as she pushed her hair back from her face. "I guess it's better that I faced her sooner or later, saves me from the let down later on" she mumbled. Rachel hadn't spoken about the Shelby situation to anyone, it was something she had just brushed off and no-one had seemed to question her further about it. So unfortunately for Sky, she seemed to be letting out the past years rants and emotions she had over it. "I'm sorry, no-one else seems to understand it all. I do apologise for loading it all on you" she said as she flashed him a small smile.
Christmas break senior year in Hawaii, doesn't sound to bad to me. Sounds a lot better than christmas break in Westerville Ohio or Lima Ohio.' "Is that an open invitiation?" she grinned as the idea ran through her head. Perhaps a little more adventure in her life would do her some good? "Because it sounds like a great idea to me" she added.
