The bus pulled in front of the small house, with a well-maintained lawn. With a pasted-on smile, Seph said goodbye to her friends before stepping off and out of her one and only safe haven that was school and school bus. Technically, those were extensions of each other but Seph couldn’t be bothered to think.
Trudging up the steps, Seph stopped and glared at the door. She really did not want to go into that house. ’Look at it this way… School in the morning’ Seph thought to herself brightly. Then, she laughed to herself grimly.
Ah who was she kidding? What type of idiot liked school? Apparently, she did. Pulling her keys out of back pocket, Seph walked the last couple of steps up to the door of her least favorite place. Inserting the key, she turned it quickly and pushed the door open gently, hoping that Mariska Smart nee Lewis would not hear it. Dropping her messenger bag in the designated spot by the door, Seph strolled into the living room. Her mother wasn’t in there. Seph’s eyes widened to an almost comical point.
Maybe she had gone out and gotten a job? She shouldn’t get her hopes up. There was always the off chance that she would be passed out over the toilet bowl. Grabbing a cup from the kitchen and filling it with cold water, Seph walked to the one and only tiny bathroom. Pushing the door open quietly, the seventeen year old leaned against the doorframe and gazed at the sight that was her mother.
Her long, dark brown dangling precariously close to the toilet, Mariska Smart was sprawled out on the floor, her head leaning against the toilet. Smiling viciously, Seph moved slowly, careful not to do anything that would wake her mother up. After all, her mother was about to get what she deserved.
Grasping the cup a little tighter, Seph sneered down at her mother before dumping the cold wake-up call over her head. Mariska jolted awake. “What was tha’ for” the woman slurred, her eyes still slightly bleary. “Wipe the drool off of your mouth” Was all Seph said as she strolled out of the bathroom, whistling a happy tune.
Glancing at the hallway clock as she strolled by, Seph sighed. She had two hours before work. Returning to the foyer, she picked up her messenger bag and trudged back into her room. Shutting the door and locking it, Seph plopped down in front of her decrepit desk, which she had bought a year ago at a yard sale.
Pulling out her Calculus homework, Seph began to work, filling out the questionnaire, quickly and efficiently. An hour later she was done. Standing up, Seph stretched and walked to her small closet, pulling out the uniform that was hanging on the door. Quickly pulling it on, she glanced at the floor-length mirror as she fit the cap over her head. Byron’s Pizza Parlor… How may I help you today?
As she walked out of the front door, Seph couldn’t help but wonder what her friends were doing.
God, she hated her life.
