Rachel Berry had found herself doing a lot of deep thinking recently. The main thought that had been occupying her mind was that of Finn Hudson and the kiss that they had shared together on stage. It was all the brunette had been able to think of lately but for today, something else had managed to creep into her mind. Sam. Sam was..well Rachel wasn't sure what he was. A team-mate would probably suit the pair of them for now. When Sam had joined New Directions, Rachel had insisted that her and Finn threw the duets competition so that Sam and Quinn would win. Finn had told her what she was doing was a nice thought, helping Sam feel more at home within the glee club but Rachel soon figured out there was a selfish motive behind her idea. She hadn't meant for it to be that way, it just was.
However everything soon worked out and Sam was soon a member of the club and seemed happy to be so. Like other members of the club, Sam wasn't someone who Rachel would see outside of rehearsals. Which once again bought it down to them not being friends but team-mates.
Rachel soon thought about the incident during the week that Mr Schuester had assigned for them to all choose and perform a song from Fleetwood Mac's Rumous album. A small cringe appeared on Rachel's face at the thought. Her actions and behaviour during that week was a part of the reason she found herself walking towards the motel where Sam and his family were staying. She had been blinded by her feelings for Finn that she was set on exposing Quinn as a cheater once again. Off course that wasn't the case at all and Sam had suffered from her actions. Rachel had tried to amend the situation by getting the glee club together with Finn to pitch in so they could buy the blonde haired boy his beloved guitar back but still Rachel had never muttered the words 'I'm sorry' and it was something that had started to eat away at her.
Prom was a night that was special for nearly every girl in high school. Just ask Quinn. For Rachel, it was a night to show that she had actually made something of herself during high school. That she had managed to find people to accept her and like her and want to share the night with her. However, that wasn't the case. With only two days to go she had yet to be asked by anyone and unfortunately Mercedes was in the same boat. Rachel soon came up with the idea that she, Mercedes and Sam could go as a non-sexual three way and thankfully he agreed and when Jesse came into the picture for all of a few hours before getting thrown out for fighting with Finn, Sam kept her (and Mercedes) company and Rachel actually had an amazing and some-what unforgettable night.
Letting out a small sigh, Rachel walked up the familiar steps of the motel towards the room where Sam and his family were staying. She knocked lightly on the door, in case Stevie or Stacey were sleeping. Stepping back, Rachel ran her hands over the front of her dress, smoothing it out while she waited.

Sam had been sitting on the couch, softly strumming his guitar. While his brother and sister slept in. Sam's parents were still in search of finding jobs. As Sam was strumming he was thinking back to how much great his friends were. He remissness on all the good memories he had during the school year.
One of his favorite memories was when the glee club bought his old acoustic guitar. Sam got into a huge fight with his family, when they told him he needed to sell that. He loved his guitar more then he loved Avatar. Which said a lot coming from the Na'vi speaking boy. Sam stopped strumming his guitar just to take a moment, and admire it.
His mind then flashed to prom. He wasn't going to go since money was a problem. But with the proposition being made with him going with Mercedes, and Rachel sounded awesome. Sam would eventually have to pay the girls back, but to have one night to remember sounded good to him. Plus, it would be a night to forget all the struggles he was going with. He continued playing his guitar. His mind raced when he thought of Mercedes. The girl he was currently crushing on. Knowbody knew about the fling they were having, since they decided to keep it a secret from the world. Prom made Sam realize he had feelings for the closeted diva. Quinn was always a thought, but he had some trust issues. The thought of girls made Sam's brain ache.
Sam stopped playing the guitar when he heard a knock on the door. It was light not to loud to wake his brother and sister. Sam placed his guitar on the couch and walked over to the door. Seeing none other then Rachel Berry right there. He wasn't exactly sure what she wanted from him. The two weren't the closest. Sam smiled, and let her into the motel room. "Hey Rachel." Sam finally managed to say.

As Rachel stood patiently waiting outside of the motel room that Sam and his family lived in, she could hear the light strum of guitar strings coming from inside the room. The sound made her happy for two reasons. One, the fact that Sam was actually in and second, that he was playing guitar. Rachel didn't know the blonde haired boy all that well but she knew how much he loved playing guitar and with how much love and joy music bought to her, she was glad that they were able to give that gift back to Sam. A horrified expression came over the brunette's face as her mind wandered to the thought of if she had to sell her most prized possession - her voice. Of course there was no way that could happen but the idea of it still scared Rachel. Almost as bad as the time she had lost her voice, she felt as if she had lost her whole world but it was Finn who made her see sense. Just because her voice was all she treasured about herself, there was a lot more to her.
A small frown replaced the look on her face as once again the overly tall football jock entered her mind. It seemed no matter how hard she tried, her thoughts would always lead back to him. Thankfully, she didn't have a lot of time to dwell on the thoughts because the door in front of her opened to reveal Sam. Rachel returned the smile to Sam and nodded as a sign of thanks as he stepped to let her inside the room. Her eyes soon fell upon the sleeping form off the two miniature blondes in the bed. " I'm sorry, is this a bad time?" she whispered in a hushed tone as she looked back to Sam.

Sam shook his head, this wasn't a bad time for company since he rarely sees it. This was one of Sam's days off that he took from the pizza parlor. "No, they should wake up soon. I have to feed them and dress them." Sam said not making it sound like a huge deal. "If you'd like you can help me." Sam offered not to sure if Rachel wanted to help, but wasn't counting on it anyways.
Sam heard his little brother Stevie moan in his sleep. He knew he was waking since Stevie usually makes noises as he awake from his slumber. Sam walked over to his side as he greeted his sleepy little brother. Stevie got out of bed and made his way into the kitchen making him a bowl of cereal since it's all they had in the house. He placed the bowl in front of Stevie and went to wake his sister Stacy. Sam walked over to her bed and tapped her lightly. She grumbled as she was being woken up, but it was natural for her to wake up this way. Stacy wasn't a morning person. Stacy sleepily walked into the kitchen sitting at the table next to Stevie. He made her a bowl of cereal. The children ate in silence. Sam looked up at Rachel. He smiled, and then spoke, "Do you want anything?" He asked trying to be a good host.

A smile of relief washed over Rachel's face when Sam told her it wasn't a bad time. She listened to his words about how he would soon have to wake the two young sleeping blondes and get them sorted. Rachel looked up to Sam and couldn't help but feel sorry for him. Of course she knew he probably wouldn't mind helping to take care of them but the fact that he had to do it in what seemed to be his spare time. As he mentioned that she could help, a genuine smile spread over the small brunette's face as she nodded eagerly.
Rachel had always wished for a younger sibling. Someone she could take care off and someone that would perhaps look up to her. She had always questioned her father's as to why they hadn't had more children. They would always just smile and say that she was all they needed and that was enough for her. Rachel however loved children. She always found their innocence and honesty so refreshing so she had no problem with helping out Sam. "Of course. I'd love too" she beamed as she watched him walk over and wake the sleepy pair. She couldn't help but laugh at how Stacy didn't seem to approve at being woke up.
Once again Rachel watched at how Sam took control off the two little ones, after he woke them up, he got their breakfast ready. A saddened expression washed over Rachel's face as she realised the situation the Evans family were in. No-one deserved to be in that situation. Sam being the age that he was should have his own room and Stacy and Stevie should have a garden to be able to play in, especially when the weather was as glorious as it was.
The silence allowed Rachel to remember why she had actually came but blurting out an apology at that precise moment didn't seem appropriate. She was cut away from her thoughts by Sam's voice. Her eyes looked up to meet his as it took her a moment to register what he had said. "Hmm? Oh, no thank-you Sam" she answered politely and then glanced from the smaller two and then back to Sam. "So what are your plans for today?" she asked brightly as her head motioned towards outside and the sunshine that was shining through the motel window.

Sam was happy when Rachel agreed to help him out. He always needed that extra help. Especially with his little sister Stacy. She was good but sometimes Sam felt she needed another girl to be around. Since his sister always asked him to play with her dolls and Sam never had the patiences to play that with her. So having Rachel around would be the best thing that could happen to him. "Thanks so much for staying. You know it's a really big help." Sam said as he took the empty bowl away from his siblings.
Sam always wished his father never lost his job. He wished he was living in his nice big home. Sam wanted his old life back. He wanted to be free and be a normal teen. He was sixteen in an adults body. Sam was growing up way to fast for his liking. He wanted to be a child again. Not spend all his time at work or in his hot motel room.
Sam nodded his head and got himself some water. He put a cup under the sink water and filled it up to his liking. He turned the sink off and thought of all the possibilities they could do for the day. Since Sam was just expecting to stay in since he felt a bit uncomfortable having Stevie and Stacy walk around the ghetto there motel was located in. "Well, I was thinking of staying in. I don't think it's to safe for them to walk around." Sam told Rachel.

As Sam thanked her for staying and agreeing to help him out, Rachel waved her hand up dismissing it. "There's nothing to thank me for, I'm happy to do it" she said with a small smile. She watched as Sam continued to clear away after the smaller two, she wanted to jump him and help him out but she didn't want him to also think she was interfering. Glancing around, she let her arms hang down by her side. "What would you like me to do?" she eventually asked as she slipped herself onto one of the chairs.
Rachel's smile faded as Sam mentioned about it not being safe for his brother and sister to walk around the area. It hadn't occurred to the brunette. Rachel felt a small pang of sadness wash over her as she thought about what the Evans family were going through. It was the summer, Stevie and Stacy should be able to play out in a garden, Sam should be out hanging with his friends and his parents shouldn't have to have the stress they were most probably feeling. Letting out a small sigh, Rachel ran a hand through her hair. It was taking everything she had in her not to offer the family her house there and then. It was then, Rachel thought it would be best to bring up why she had wanted to see Sam in the first place. Biting her lip slightly, she squirmed nervously in her seat, nerves were something that Rachel rarely experience and when she did, it was always obvious.
"I..I wanted." she started and paused, clearing her throat slightly. "I wanted to apologise Sam, the way Finn and I acted before was unacceptable. We had no right to do what we did..and to approach you about it so openly in front of the glee club" she spoke, her voice lower than normal. "And I also wanted to thank you, for prom. You didn't have to agree to the crazy plan but I'm glad you did" she smiled. "Despite Jesse and Finn getting into that ridiculous fight, I had a good night..as did Mercedes I think" she added and realised she hadn't really spoke to Mercedes about the prom. After that, everything seemed to happen so fast and the next thing she knew, it was Nationals.
Realising she hadn't given Sam a chance to talk, Rachel flashed him a sheepish smile and fell quiet as she slumped back in the chair slightly.
