Jesse St. James can be seen in a very different light by several people, it just depends on who that person is. His teammates on Vocal Adrenaline tend to like him a little more, since he had led them to four strait regional wins while he was a student there. New Directions members have never really trusted him, except for Rachel. But, in all honesty, his behavior doesn't exactly change, no matter who he's around.

Jesse is known to be incredibly competitive. The boy knows he's good, almost too good. That can be a problem because he's overflowing with confidence. He's very cocky and conceited and sometimes even a little full of himself. He can be easily rude and arrogant, especially to the members of New Directions. Overall, he's really kind of a jerk. Winning is the most important thing to him, and he would do anything for a regional or national title. However, although many didn't believe that he actually ever loved Rachel, he really did care about her. He was being honest when he told her that he regretted breaking her heart. Unfortunately for him, she chose Finn. Jesse still isn't sure if he's over her, but he doesn't mind getting down with other ladies while he's around. But his main intent, while he's still young and talented, is to do what he does best- "destroy the competition".

Winning is nothing new to Jesse St. James. He spent his high school career as the talented lead of Vocal Adrenaline, and one of the reasons why they were the most feared competitor of New Directions. Also one of the reasons why they were the most hated competitor. However, for a moment in his senior year, he did leave Vocal Adrenaline in order to join New Directions. However, that was under the guidance of his VA coach, Shelby. It didn't turn out well, because he ended up breaking Rachel's heart. In reality, he loved her but she probably never even really knew about it.

He left for college to major in show choir at UCLA, but was unaware that he had to attend other classes as well, and flunked out. Still addicted to show choir and winning, he made his way back to McKinley and offered himself as a show choir consultant, because that was what he wanted to do with his life now. After all, nobody knows more about winning that Jesse St. James. He worked at mending his relationship with Rachel, which worked for a while until that kiss that she shared with Finn on stage. Jesse was jealous of that, and when New Directions didn't move on, he quickly blamed it on the kiss. Unhappy with not winning, Jesse doesn't plan to work for New Directions anymore, but to instead come back and coach Vocal Adrenaline, and continue their long running winning streak.

During his time as the New Directions consultant, he didn't exactly create new friendships, but he did earn himself several nicknames by some of the students. Mr. St. James was a name that Mercedes used to address him, and Jesse St. Sucks from Kurt. Other students that weren't too fond of him, because he was rather harsh with them and their talent (in an attempt to make Rachel stand out, of course) were Finn and Santana. But that doesn't matter anymore. He's back with VA to win now, and he'll settle for nothing less.
